The Hunger Games: An Existential Consideration

Satre suggests that when we step to the edge of a high precipice the fear we have is not of falling but of jumping. We are suddenly faced with the implications of our freedom to choose and do not trust ourselves. That’s sort of how I feel about the success of a movie like The Hunger Games. How entertaining should we find the concept of competitive killings among adolescents? Are we so close to that reality that we are prepared to look upon it as benign enough to warrant a pg-13 blockbuster? Once upon a time that would've been a subject fit for the long harsh lens of Stanley Kubrick.
Now it shares market space with super heroes and ninja turtles.
